Galata Ice Cream and Desserts, located at 5201 2nd St. in Belmont Shore, Long Beach, is a family-owned Turkish café celebrated for its authentic Dondurma—Turkish ice cream known for its stretchy and chewy texture.
The café offers 26 flavors, including traditional options like mastic gum, alongside desserts such as baklava and Turkish delight.
Dondurma is Turkish mastic ice cream, made of salep (ground orchid flour), mastic (plant resin) and sugar. Three qualities distinguish Dondruma: harder texture, resistance to melting, and chewiness (from the mastic).
Dondurma was first created over 300 years ago in the Kahramanmaras region of Turkey. Over the Years it has becomethe most popular dessert in Turkey, with millions of gallons consumed every year.
Incredible desserts. We are used to over-sugared American sweets and the natural ingredients they use (like plants) to sweeten their treats is remarkable. Plenty of people came through while we sat and ate - it’s a new and popular place. They cut however much of the Delight you’d like (you don’t need to buy a whole “loaf”), and the coffee is incredible in flavor and presentation. I’ll be going back! We enjoyed the hospitality of the gentleman behind the counter, and the decor of the place was inviting and unique.
